本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛The most important thing for you is to think about: What job will be good for me? If you are aged like me, I don't suggest you become a programmer. You may claim yourself as a system adminsitrator or DBA, but not both. You may also prepare two versions of resume, one focusing on DBA while another on system adminsistrator.
Once you make up your mind, you need to
enhance your skills. Be sure you are really good in some field. If you want to be a system adminsiotrator or a DBA, a certificate from Oracle or Solaris may help. Of course, it is a good thing for you konw so many things. The point is to make your resume consistent. Don't follow my example: I know MS SQL, ORACLE, DB2, MySQL, Interbase, .... but I am no expert in any DB products. Fortunately, I am a Java programmer, and the employer usually is satisfied with the fact that I have ever used so many databases.
Now let me assume you are good at AS/400.
The fact will be you have few opportunites.
Why? because you know only about AS/400.
To survive, you need visit IBM's site and learn the whole IBM product family... You should learn those products from a high-level view.
You should alos know a something about DB2 family... You should be able to talk about RS/6000.... You should NOT say you just managed one or two AS/400 machines.
