depend on how long you have had your US DL. I just remembered that you can use your foreign DL up to 3 months in ON, after that, you need to change it to ON DL. So if you have already held US DL for 21or more but less than 24 months, you can use your US DL till touch 24 months bottom line. Otherwise, you have to take road test.

If you held US DL less than 21 months, then the last way you may think about is just like what you mentioned: keep the US DL till get 24 months, and then change it. But I'm not sure with that.

      Yes, you can change the US DL to BC DL if your US DL issued more than 18 months. I did it last year. So, just use your US DL till July or August, and change it to BC DL.

      Some other points here:

      1). you can use your US DL to get car insurance from ICBC here. They call Autoplan and many insurance agents sell it here.

      2). Autoplan is the ONLY liability insurnace you can buy in BC. Not like in US that you may have a lot of choices.

        24+ months US DL can directly change to ON DL, not writing and road tests, but have to take eye screen test.

        More choices of liability insurance.
