Data Entry – My first Job in Canada

After sending numerous resumes and meeting lots of agents, I finally got a call from an agent who informed me to start my first job the next Monday. It was a data entry job for an electronic data processing company, $10/hour+4%vacation pay. I was over excited, and felt so lucky compared with fellow Chinese immigrants. At least it was an office job, no shifts required, and the company had a big name, it was a TD affiliate.

It happened in Jul 2001, the second month I landed in Canada.

Job itself was not so hard, but required typing speed (number keys only). I did not know I could type that fast, until I took a test and was told by the agent that my number key stoke was almost 10,000/hour.

Colleagues were from everywhere, most of them are visible minorities. I soon teamed up with a Filipina girl, who joined the company on the same day. We were being bullied by some permanent employees in the team. They gave us all those hard work which we could not type as fast and then they complained to the supervisor that we were lazy…….lol…….I felt sorry for them, I knew that they had been living on this job for 10 years and would probably kept on doing so for their lives. I actually would never be a threat to their job safety, but they would never understand.

My Filipina friend was so angry when supervisor explained the complaints made against us, but she was such a nice girl and had modest/hardworking/enduring characteristics (as most Asians). She did not fight back. I did. I was let go at the end of Jan2002. Business was suffering after Sept11, 2001. Company started to let temporary staff go….I was the first to set home, because I was the only one who fought back. My Filipina friend was let go a few months later, and so were many of my Chinese colleagues.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
