Toronto police officer charged with manslaughter in fatal shooting

A Toronto police tactical officer has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a 26-year-old man, the first such charge in a police shooting in the city in 13 years, the Special Investigations Unit said Wednesday.

The announcement comes at an uncomfortable time, as the service and the SIU spar over allegations of police brutality at the G20 summit.

A Toronto police officer has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the September death of a 26-year-old man.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit announced that Constable David Cavanagh of the Toronto Police is facing one charge of manslaughter following an investigation into a September 29 altercation between police and 26-year-old Eric Osawe.

According to the SIU, police executed a search warrant at an apartment on Dunbloor Road in Toronto, during which time there was an “interaction” between police and Mr. Osawe. Somehow Mr. Osawe sustained a fatal gunshot wound during the search.

Const. Cavanagh will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on January 6.

The SIU, an arm’s length agency tasked with investigating incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault, will not comment further on the case.
