      • Toronto
    • up

                • just sent you an email.
                  • replied. :-))
        • yes,
you are right! When you take out (except for the first purchase of house), they will deduct 10% if you take less 5000$, they will deduct more if you take more than 5000$. This 10% is tax, if you have no other income that year, you can get the tax back.
    • Withdrawing from an RRSP is a surefire way to : 1) Have less income at retirement and for the rest of your life. 2) Pay more tax. So, THINK TWICE .. Let your money keep working for you.
        • You have to fully realize the huge effect withdrawals today have on accumulated amounts tomorrow. As you withdraw assets you lose the ability to save these funds. Your eligible RRSP room is lost.
          • so what would you suggest to solve his liquidity problem? get a loan?
            • Maybe OSAP student loan?

Many people have used RRSP savings to supplement their annual incomes by "cashing in" previous years' savings. How much does this really cost?

The three top costs of RRSP withdrawals are : Loss of Compounding; Financial Institution withholding tax; and the high cost of "Tax Bracket Bump".

Let's look at these three costs ...

              1. The High Cost of Lost Compounding

Many individuals do not fully realize the huge effect withdrawals today have on accumulated amounts tomorrow. As you withdraw assets you lose the ability to save these funds. Your eligible RRSP room is lost.

              $5,000 compounded at 8% over ...

              10 Years equals $10,794
              15 Years equals $15,860
              20 Years equals $23,304
              25 Years equals $34,242
              30 Years equals $50,313

We think that this is a lot of money to walk away from.

              2. The High Cost of Financial Institution Withholding Tax

When you withdraw assets from an RRSP you expose the dollars you are withdrawing to tax. Financial institutions are bound by law to withhold a portion of your withdrawal for instant remittance to the government. This means that although you may withdraw a certain amount, part of it is withheld. You never see it.

              Financial Institution withholding rules :

              Withdrawals up to Withhold Amount
              $5000 10% $500
              $5001 p $15000 20% $3000
              $15001 + 30% $4500

On our previous example of a $5000 withdrawal, you have now walked away from $23,304 (in 20 years) and you have $4,500 to spend (until tax time).

              3. The High Cost of "Tax Bracket Bump"

When you withdraw assets from an RRSP the amount of the withdrawal is added to your income for that year. Not the amount you received, but the full amount of the withdrawal.

If you earned $30,000 in that year ... and you withdrew $5,000, your total income is now $35,000. All RRSP withdrawals are additional income. That means your RRSP withdrawal comes to you at your highest marginal tax rate. Also, the financial institution withholding tax will rarely cover the total tax on these withdrawals, you will have to pay additional tax.

This can be very expensive.
        • How old are you? If you are not old enough to reach 69, your full RRSP would be taxed as a yearly income even if you withdraw a penny from it.

            http://www.citizensbank.ca/menuId/60436

What if I need to withdraw funds from my RRSP?

All funds withdrawn from an RRSP are subject to a withholding tax. This means they have to be declared as earned income and will be recorded on a T4RRSP by the issuer of your plan. Also, all RRSP withdrawals are included in your taxable income.

            What is Withholding Tax?

When you withdraw money from your RRSP, you must pay a tax on the a percentage of the amount withdrawn:
10% withdrawals of $5,000 or less
            20% withdrawals between $5,000 and $15,000 inclusive
            30% withdrawals over $15,000
The amount of tax withheld will be reported to you on a T4RRSP and can be claimed on your tax return.
