(suse)root's password is set during installation. if you forget root's password, you can specify init=/bin/sh when you boot and remount your root and vi to /etc/passwd and remove the second field of first line

Thx a lot! But the strange problem is that I did remember the root passwd during installation. The passwd is correct since I tried twice. As well, how can modify the psword file if I can not bring up the system.

try linux 1 when you reboot your system and you can change your password after you enter the system

another way: go to toms.net and download the tomsrtbt and create a toms root boot disk. then boot from that disk, mount your linux system, then you'll be able to edit /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files.
