        • If you really could be a very creative and skillful finance people with the strategic thinking and business acumen, it won't be less demanding. For any industry or position, if you are targeting at being the best, you pretty much will be paid decently.
          • Would you please elaborate a little more on "strategic thinking and business acumen"? Thank you for sharing your experience. This is an interesting subject.
            • If your role needs to provide decision making support, i.e provide the management financial support for them to decide which option they want to pursue, you need solid understanding of the business and ability to think from the management's view.
You also need the ability to build models to forecast the business case results and post-mortem to justify your assumptions. You need to remember every single key number, all scenerio analysis results and answer all the questions brought up by the decision makers in your presentation to the management etc...
              • Thanks a lot. I guess the approach is different from company to company.
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛There are times you feel frustrated that you couldn't do much. To build a business case model here in our group is only a little more than the technical part of Excel. All the key assumptions, drivers are decided and provided by other departments. We did help to build the model, but I won't say we own or we truly "develop" the model. Our role is more or less as the coordinator and supporter.
Over years, the FA may gain knowledge and insight here and there, but remember, this behavior is not required or even encouraged by the organization. There are separate "planning and analysis" teams belong to the operation or function departments outside Finance. We are not necessarily trusted. Our own comparably higher turnover doesn't help the situation either.
Our director has this vision for the teams. I am afraid to say he has stirred the water a little, but overall, we go nowhere.

Again, thank you for sharing your experiences. I am sorry if I sound grumpy this morning. Do you work downtown? If so we shall have coffee together someday.
Now I will go to grab today's stimulate and hopefully things get better. You have a nice Monday too. It is a pleasure to chat with you on Rolia.

                Kind regards.

                • One thing I feel lucky is that I came across two friends who are really gurus for finance area. I learn from them not only the language but also how to be a great finance professional.
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛The techniques needed for finance such as the advanced excel skills is just a portion of your work but
most important will be doing something differently from other traditional finance peers.

I found it is harder to improve what people have been using for long time-at least it would take long time to change it fundamentally. However, it would be easier to build a brand new model with all your creativity and better rationale. Taking ownership on something you can control and make it useful to the key users will help you to open the door to more trust. You need good eyes to capture the opps to show your ability and add value to the organization. There is always a chance, the sharper you are, the lesser blind spots you will have.

Everyone gets good days and bad days. It is ok if you are grumpy on your own. But you may not want to bring it on to your co-workers and managers. Not everyone will truly forgive you easily because you just had a bad day. When you are surrounded by smart people, really EQ wins you more opps. Look at those high level people, the higher they are, the calmer they seem to be.

Yes, I am working in downtown-but in Mississauga not in Toronto, lol. I will be more than happier to communicate with people on Rolia to discuss things and improve myself.
Send me PM if you want. Grabbing a coffee might be possible…who knows…:-)更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
      • thanks for sharing
    • 我就不说行业了,我们已签了codeofconduct, our company professional staffs' average salary is 195K, except for office admin. staffs. plus 5 weeks vacation for all staffs.
      • Does Code of Conduct specify the industry salary is a secret? Without the background, the number you gave is less meaningful. No offence, just thoughts.
        • You are right. I realized this. what I can tell you is that the industry is still related to Finance/Accounting realm. I am sorry I can't tell you more.
IB/CB也许有可能。

      电讯行业,treasury manager,主要负责risk management,mosly FX,and hedging。$120K+15% bonus

      零售业,sr treasury manager,主要负责M&A和special projects,$115K-$120K + 20% bonus

      • Hello, are you referring to the top Insurance companies? I was told a mid- large size insurance company's senior analyst was only paid 50-60k, unbelievable!
        • I think the positions LZ mentioned about are more related to finance / risk & capital management functions.
if I'm not mistaken, LZ's background is in actuarial field, not accounting...
          • I'm in Risk Management. Actuarial/accounting paid is comparable. Accountant with a CA designation normally starts as a Manager at my company, after a few years of suffering in the big 4.
        • Senior operation analyst is very different than senior financial analyst or senior risk analyst.
          • Thank you for the clarification. The information people told me was for Senior FA role. I was surprised when I heard SFA was only worth 50-60k. I think your number makes more sense.
