Not sure what your mean by "known"...again, LZ can certainly try out other provinces, however for provinces that have merged with CPA, I would say the chance is very little

as his/her current situation won't fulfill CPA's requirements set out in their bylaw:

"(C) Individual Members. All individuals who are members in good standing of an Organization Member shall be Individual Members. The status of Individual Members who are members in good standing of an Organization Member and the status of Individual Members who cease to be members in good standing of an Organization Member shall be communicated by written notification (including notification by electronic means) from the Organization Member to the Corporation in accordance with such policies and practices of the Corporation as exist from time to time."

Apparently, CGAs pending permit in Quebec won't be deemed "in good standing of an Organization Member" as they have been deprived of their rights to stay in that status.

  • Quebec CGA Merger Experience
I am a "CGA,CPA pending issue of permit" in Quebec. This is an unique status in Quebec, which means you cannot get the license only because of the French.
As we were told by CGA before the merging, we can stay at this status no time limit (not subject to the 5 year limit). Now it was changed because of the new CPA. Our file is CLOSED if we cannot pass the French exam within the 5 years start with the registration with CGA. When I called the order, the lady told me that the old rule was from CGA, and CPA would not respect it. Hope my experience will help you make the decision.
    • Thank you for sharing your experience!
    • Does it mean if you can't pass the French exam, you will lose your designation, you will have no designation at all?
      • When closing the file, CPA order returned the annual fee we paid. then we are not related to the order anymore (no designation, not a candidate anymore).
But, they said they might re-evaluate the file if we had the chance to pass the French exam. who knows?
          • The French requirement is for all professional to get the license - CGA, CA, CMA, doctor, engineer, nurse, etc.
We know we will not get the license without passing the French, but we can call ourselves CGA senior candidate before the change.
Now, we have no difference with other accountant, we took the course, passed the exam for nothing.
            • so, not a CGA yet before the change?
              • My point is that we are unfairly kicked off from the CPA order because the CPA does not respect CGA's promise to us.
Maybe my ID misled you. That was long time ago that I was hunting for a job. Just do not know how to change it.

I already satisfied CGA's requirement for a few years as you CGAs at other provinces. If a CGA from other province wants to transfer to QC, you will be the same status as me (pending issue of permit, if you cannot pass the French exam which was held by the French language office of the provinces (not related to CGA)). But the accountant who graduated from French university have no English requirement.

There are two kinds of CGAs in Quebec. One type of them have the licence because they satisfied the French requirement. The other type is the CGAs who are not passing the French exam, that's why the licence is pending. In these years, we are paying the annual due slightly less than the licensed CGAs but more than pace level Candidates. CGA assured us that we can stay in this status as long as we wanted. Now we were kicking out of the order by the new CPA order.
Jane, CGA?
          • It won't hurt to ask. If I were LZ, I would try to seek all possible ways to keep my designation
              • Not sure what your mean by "known"...again, LZ can certainly try out other provinces, however for provinces that have merged with CPA, I would say the chance is very little

CGA pending member
                  • Now u know why I suggested Ontario in the first place
