Start your business off on the right foot in Canada

Part II

According to Industry Canada’s Key Small Business Statistic report dated July 2012, only 51% of small and medium-sized businesses survived for the first five years. To run a successful business, small business owners and start-up companies have to deal with many challenges to make a right start. After having a well-received seminar regarding a right business structure and setting a path for securing a business start-up loan, we are proudly to launch the second part of the small business series aiming to help you understand how to take advantage of the government incentive programs and what the tax considerations are when taking money out of your company, using your car to meet clients or offering dental and health plan coverage to you and your employees.

Every year, Federal government gives away more than $3.5 billion in tax credits to companies promoting and assisting private sector research and development. There are also various government incentives programs that could support small business to enhance cash flow and reduce tax burdens. In the first part of this seminar, we are inviting Martha Oner, Senior Manager in the government incentive group from Grant Thornton LLP again to induce how small businesses can qualify those generous credits from the government:

The Scientific Research and Experimental Development Program:

· An overview of the “technology” eligibility criteria

· Introduction to documentation requirements

· Discussions of the eligible costs – including areas where judgment is required

· Discussions of how to maximize SRED benefits for a small business

As a small business owner, you may regularly take fund out of your business accounts for your personal use. You and your employee travel by car very often to visit clients. You might also worry about the expensive medical costs and consider how to offer an attractive compensation and health plan package to keep your key employees. The second part of this seminar, we are inviting Judy Lin, Senior Tax Manager of Grant Thornton LLP to help you navigate through the tax implications of shareholder loans and taxable benefits rules. She will also help you consider structuring the employee compensation in tax efficient manners.

Taxation of Employer/employee Benefits

· Income tax treatment of benefits

· Shareholder loans

· Employee allowances and automobile benefits

· Employee health benefit

· planning opportunities for key employees
