Overtime - Is it productive or destructive?

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I am totally against mandatory overtime policy in the busy season. It works for nobody, whether employer or employee, whether diligent staff or slackers.

If you are a self-motivated person, the overtime policy is of no use to you. Regardless of the enforcement of such a policy, you will plan around and head, and get the work done before deadline. Because of your self-discipline, you are never a last-minute person. You do not need to work around the clock before the deadlines. The overtime policy is just 100% de-motivating and destructive to a person's health and productivity, because you are putting 150% of your effort into your job already, and now they are asking more of your time and effort.

For slackers, or those who take things easy in the beginning and catch up later on, such a policy will make you more relaxed that you normally are. You are thinking, whatever... I will get it done on the weekend since I must show up at work regardless. I will wait until the weekend then. Man, that will slow down the whole process from the very beginning. O we will say "inefficiency" in one word, haha...

Talking about the productivity, the purpose of overtime is to get more work done. Could it really achieve what it desires to? I doubt. We are human beings and need to rest. I am being very honest. If I work Monday to Friday, 9am until 8pm, by Friday night, I am totally gone. Do not even ask me where I live. I just want to save my energy to sleep. Imagine someones asks me to come over and work on the weekend. Forget it, I can show up physically. But my whole body is exhausted and totally worn out. It is on strike quietly.

The conclusion is that there is no productivity with the enforcement of a mandatory overtime policy. It does not only affect the weekend adversely, but also regular working weekdays. We always say, "win-win" situlation, you see, this is just the opposite.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

    • I totally agree. My brain could not work well after 7 pm. I slept more than 12 hours yesterday to recover from the 6 days work in the whole Feb. It is quite upset to think of another two months with the same longer working hours. My body is tired.
