It's never too late to update your skill set. On top of GWT, also have a look at JavaScript libraries such as jQuery, Dojo, Prototype/Script.aculo.us

It's not just Java, it's IT in general. Why not switch to accounting? Their stuff don't change at all for decades.

I totally agree with you. Just on Java there are many directions, it's easy to get people confused about which way to follow.
