it's illustrator file. In illustrator, you can only open file in the same version or higher version it's saved. For example,if the file you tried to open is created in illustrator 8.0, you can open it only in illustrator 8.0 or higher version. You can never open a 10.0 file in 8.0.
What kind of format you need finially. Maybe I can help you to convert it.
